Information for Referrers

The project aims to engage with new referrals in a welcoming, friendly and inclusive manner. Once an appropriate referral form has been received the young people are able to begin their Mentoring Plus experience.

Referrals for children and young people

Mentoring Plus accepts referrals for children and young people from schools, police and other partner agencies throughout the year.

For our mentoring programme outside school, we accept children and young people who:

During 2014 we are piloting a mentoring programme specifically designed for 18-21 year olds. We also mentor children aged 8-11 in their school settings.

Referral process

Mentor training and matching is concentrated in the spring, summer and autumn terms, and we work with children and young people in advance of their final matching to get to know them and help identify their needs.

Once we receive a completed qualifying referral form, we meet the young person to explain more about the project and to invite them to join in with project activities. Initial meetings can take place in school, at home or other agreed venues.

Often contact will be made with the referrer prior to meeting with the young person. We aim to keep referrers updated throughout the course of a mentoring relationship, and regularly participate in Teams Around the Child and other partnership working.
